Managing The Change Process

Book Review   by:vikramjit     Original Authors: David K. Carr; Kelvin J. Hard

Abstract: A very helpful guidebook for upcoming change agents, group/team leaders. It provides practical approach to initiating, managing and successfully implementing change in any organization. The leaders/managers got to be alert to responses, which come from within and outside the organization, whenever any change in procedure/process is introduced. The leaders have to adopt pragmatic management strategy to mitigate resistance to change and ensure success of their business improvement process and turnaround efforts. The authors have spelled out simple strategies for change management based on extensive experience of Coopers & Lybrand, a big consulting firm that is dedicated to change management practices. Each of the strategies has been well tested in organizations like Agway, New York Life, Prudential Direct, and the Office of Naval Intelligence. They have presented their comprehensive analysis of the global changes confronting today's business leaders. The book focuses on first developing attitudinal change among workforce to increase their commitment to the organization goals. Thereafter, the change in business process and rightsizing of organization structure should be introduced, with participation from the employees. The key factor is involvement of senior management/ stakeholders to support the change. It is the people who make it succeed/fail any change. It is well established that Change is a natural process, which will continue to happen for any growing organization. Therefore management should facilitate the change by encouraging people to participate and at the same time be firm to weed out highly resistant and negative thinking employees as they will spoil the schedule of events and delay the change. vikramjits@hotmail.com
