Courage is defined as a quality that enables you to face danger or
pain without showing fear. It is commonly found
in any literary sources
such as: novels, short stories or plays. However, this theme appears
most frequently in ancient Greek literature; Homer’s Odyssey is a great
example in which
courage is discussed. The protagonist, Odysseus, is
reputed to be “resourceful” and exhibits some element of courage. He
uses his with to overcome any difficulties upon his return home. On one
occasion, as Odysseus explores the land of the Cyclops, a race of
uncivilized, cannibalistic, one- eyed giants, he confronts Polyphemus.
Having been trapped, Odysseus blinds the monster and rescues his
friends. A second example of courage can be found when Odysseus
survives the temptation of the Sirens’ song and an attack by a six-
headed monster named Scylla, Odysseus and his crew arrives at the
island of Helios. Despite severe warning not to, the men feast on the
cattle of sun god during Odysseus’ brief absence. Zeus is outraged and
destroys the ship as the Greeks depart, killing all but Odysseus, who
is washed ashore at Calypso’s island, where he stays until released
seven years later.
