The Golden Compass/Northern Lights

Book Review   by:adc1057     Original Author: Philip Pullman
ª

“The Golden Compass” or originally known as “Northern Lights” is the first novel of the “His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman. The Golden Compass was the subject of great criticism as the church felt it violated Christianity. Now let’s come back to the main plot of this novel, when that is what we all come to shvoong for. This story takes place in another world which is much like our own. The human beings in this world have “daemons” which have the human’s soul in it and is much like the human. And dust is something which connects the entire parallel universe that exists. The mystery of Dust has not yet been solved by any. Lyra Belaqcue, a 12 year old girl, is an orphan who is brought up in Jordan College, Oxford. A lady of great importance, Mrs.Marisa Coulter, wishes to make Lyra her apprentice and she assents. Before that she is given a priceless alitheometer, which resemble a golden compass and can tell her anything she wants to know. Consequently, her best friend Roger Parslow and other children gets kidnapped and she runs away from her house to save them. Soon she finds out that horrific experiments are being carried out on kidnapped children in the icy wastelands of the distant North by Magisterium-controlled scientists because their innocence makes them less attracted towards dust. Lyra, with the help of many other characters saves the children and discovers who her true parents are.
