Romeo and Juliet

Book Review by: AgniezkaC

Original Author: William Shakespeare
This abstract was translated from ROMEU E JULIETA
The story is set in the City of Verona. Two powerful families are mortal enemies: the Montague's and the Capulets's. They
live constant conflicts, which disturbs the order and peace of the city. Such things enrages the Prince, who determines high punishment to those envolved in the conflict: if the provocations and fightings did not stop, their sentence would be death.
Romeo, a young passionate and fearless Montague, suffers for loving Rosaline. His best friends are Benvolio and Mercutio, who, in the attempt to make him forget Rosaline, invite him to the masquerade party given by the Capulet. Romeo, then, falls for a young and fair lady, Juliet Capulet, who returns his love.
Later, Romeo invades the orchard of Juliet's house and, hidden, listens to the declaration of her feelings for him. He decides to reveal his presence and, after swearing their love, the couple set the wedding for the next day.
Romeo goes to Friar Laurence and convinces him to marry them secretly. With the help of Juliet's nurse, the ceremony takes place. After it, Romeo watches the duel between his friends and Tybalt, a Capulet and Juliet's cousin. Despite his rival's threats, Romeo refuses to fight, but Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo, taken by rage, kills Tybalt. The Prince smoothes the penitence and allows Romeo to live, but banishs him from the city forever. Romeo takes refuge in Friar Laurence's cell. Juliet, promised to Count Paris by her father, receives the dreadful news and stays by her husband. She tells the nurse to find him and give him a ring as the proof of her feelings. She asks Romeo to go to her room at night, and the couple spend the night together. The nurse, however, even after helping them, tries to convince Juliet that Romeo is not good enough for her, making the young one angry. Romeo leaves for Mantua soon in the morning, after the lark's song, which represents dawn. Meanwhile, Juliet's parents are resolved upon marrying her to Paris. Desperate, Juliet asks for the help of Friar Laurence, who advises her to accept the marriage to avoid suspicions and gives her a bottle of elixir which would simulate her death. The plan was: Juliet was to drink the bottle's content, her family would believe in her being dead, the marriage with the count would not happen and, through the means of a letter, the Friar would explain it to Romeo, bringing the young lovers together again.
The news of his lover's death, however, Romeo receives, but not the letter, nor the explanation of the plan. Then, he goes to the apothecary and buys poison, deciding to die too.
He returns to town and fights the Count in the tomb where Juliet is. They duel and Romeo assassinates Paris. He then takes the poison in his hand, drinks it in front of Juliet's corpse and dies in her arms. Friar Laurence tries to stop him, but it is too late; and he runs not to be discovered. Before, however, wakes Juliet, so horrified that decides to stay together with her great love. Juliet kisses Romeo in the hope there is a drop of poison left, but nothing remains. She then grabs Romeo's dagger and stabs herself, dying with her husband.
The families, after acknowledging the sacrifice of the young ones, forgive each other and the peace is reestablished in the name of their children's love.
