A History of homosexuality : From ancient till now

Book Review by: reginalie

Original Author: Collin Spencer
History of homosexuality
There''s many kind of attitude about homosexuality. From people that anti homosexuality, tolerance,
let it, or people that support it. Many point of views, from religion, cultural, till political views. From before century time till now, from many places at the worlds, many country, even at the animals world, homosexuality phenomenon never ends the conversation, debate, and research. Nowadays, a little bit hard to find a literature about homosexuality in a book, and I mean outside the common study, just like it''s genetic or because of study, what''s sexual contaminate disease from homosexual activity, till horrible definition about homosexual phenomenon at a big city (books with "undercover" tittle) through first person''s view. No, but deep study about homosexuality from various period, cultural background, and from various historical event. Study detail that is neutral without any sentiment or private support, but still informative. History of Homosexuality: From ancient Time Till Now from Collin Spencer is one from few literature about homosexuality from different point of view. Spencer gives various social cultural aspects and historical events, from big figure till the trivial, that''s realted to the homosexuality. As an opening, Spencer reveal homosexuality phenomenon that is also happened at the animal''s world. Animal just like cow, anthelope, bonobo (like a primate), and chimp have been reported by the viewer has done sexual activities just like homosexual, such as rub their penis each other, oral sex, even the female chimp show an agressiveness to the male and prefer to "ride" female chimp and imitate what''s male chimp does on the season (imagine being the researcher and see this animals).
The next explanation, just like the sub tittle, arranged cronologically by Spencer, from the prehistoric, ancient, middle century, renaissance, pre moderns, to modern. But the explanation in a chapter from pieces of research, myth, report of view, explanation about artifact, piece of letter, even piece of bibble, in one side it is his plus but it might be confusing for common people; besides this book has no ilustrated. No ilustrated has been compensated using detail explanation, even interesting trivial facts just like Emperor Nero that castrat his male slave, change his indentity to be a female the marry her. Or cultural marriage among between man at Fujian China, where the older man marry younger man and call him as ''adopted little brother'', then his family treat him as a son in law. Spencer looks give much more attention in study about Greece, Rom, and other European especially at chapter about ancient, but it is might be because on that culture homosexuality has become philosophy and religion even associated on their God figure.
The reader can also know about letter, even ancient and classical poetry, that explicitly explain about homosexuality aspects, just like praise and desire that has been said by a male poet to his son, love ill poetry by Sappho, a female poet from Lesbos island to other female, that give the term lesbian, even Shakespeare''s love sonnet that is famous aaparently refer to homosexuality love, not heterosexual just like everyone thought. On the other hand, there is a cultural ceremony that explicit and looks brutale about love between two men especially on initiation ceremony for boys at Melanesian and Oceanian island, where the culture to swallow cemen in oral sex becomes a part to be a mature man.
This book not the only one referrence about socio-cultural aspects from homosexuality. There''s so many information that''s added to this book that can help the reader to find deeper information ar to continue the research. I recommend this book to the researchers, cultural observers, historical observers, student, or general people that only want to search a good book to read.
