"Tales of the Moulin du Bruit" by William Wharton is a hilarious story of an American painter Henry and his family trying to adjust to living in France in the 70s.For an Amarican man Paris of that time seems almost oriental and ludicrous but he puts up with all that with stoicism. As a painter Henry doesn''t earn much money, what is more his wife is expecting their fourth child. However, they don''t mind their financial situation as for them the greatest wealth is freedom and the people they meet.Their imagination and enthusiasm help them to bring out beauty even in their tiny flat which according to Henry looks like "three medium size wardrobes put in a row".After a few years of city life Henry and Loretta decide to leave Paris and move to the country.A crazy real estate agent is supposed to help them find a house. It proves to be quite difficult to catch up with him as Henry and Loretta have to drive two dilapidated cars and their children take turns to get sick on the way.As a result they get into trouble with the local police.Eventually they arrive at an old ruined water-mill.The buildings are in a terrible condition but they fall in love with the beautiful countryside. For the next few months they repair the buildings and become acquainted with their neighbours from the nearby village. While living in Moulin du Bruit they learn the life stories and secrets of the villagers, their habits and life style. All that seen from the perspective of a foreigner and commented in a keen way makes an extremely funny book.
