Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza has a epistolary romance when they were still young. But when she returned home after a trip she realized that her relationship with Florentino is filled with disenchantment.Fermina rejected him and left Florentino sick and obsessed with love.

With the pain of losing Fermina, Florentino had sex with 622 women to fill the pain the he is feeling. Fermina with his fathers pressure and the school mistress was forced to marry Dr. Juvinal Urbino and became a respectable wife.
When Dr. Urbino died, Fermina and Florentino once again got connected. They had been exchanging letters and weekly visits and their relationship has become stronger that the first time they have. The two have become inlove again. Afraid for the scandal, They went on a trip and the captain lowered a yellow flag cholera having them go to exile and be together forever.
