"McBride" by Nick Rothstein is a plain spoken, realistic story set in a domestic and work setting. It is told in first person through the eyes of Eddie Dooley, a father, husband, and company owner. The story begins with Dooley running into an old classmate, McBride. McBride was a bully and has become a drug addict, but Dooley feels sorry for him (despite their past exchanges) and offers him a job at his moving business. Ultimately, McBride is unable to keep the job and Dooley takes the opportunity to insult him further. This changes Dooley's life for the better.
I really enjoyed this story because Dooley grew by the end of the story. He didn't simply win the situation and become some kind of hero. He lost the things that had been important to him, but learned that other things were more important. Rothstein engagingly delivers the story to the reader, and allows him or her into Dooley's shoes.
