A fantastic book for people who love the concept of power. Stroud is a master when describing the strength of magical powers.
Micheal was asleep on a hill side when the dragon's powers flooded into him. He woke up dying of thirst and shocked at the way people looked. He could see their souls and was amazed at their beauty. Soon, he returns home grinning and laughing where his sister and brother assume he's been doing something wrong. He tries to tell them the truth but all in vain. Soon, another man known as Mr. Cleever arrives at the Macintyre residence asking for information. Michael took his brother to the spot where he got his power and his brother is also affected by the dragon's powers. His brother, Stephen revived from the shock and helped Michael when possible. Later Michael's sister asks him to meet Mr. Cleever. Michael's life falls apart from here. He meets Cleever who enters his mind and Michael realises that Cleever was one of them. He runs away and confronts his sister and using his power, he torments her soul.
Stephen locked him up but soon Michael burned down the door, obsessed by the amazing power. Michael joins Cleever in his attempt to raise the dragon. Soon Stephen meddles in their work and Cleever orders Michael to kill his brother and his sister who Cleever had already captured. Michael was all set to but stopped. He continued his work without telling Cleever. Michael had powers beyong imagining and he was destined to raise the dragon with another powerful, old man.
The dragon was brought to life. A major fight of extreme power takes place and the end is an absolute entertainer. A fantastic book which demonstates what power can do to a person. A must read. Jonathan Stroud is also the author of The Bartimaeus Trilogy, another superb series.
