This book is an ambitious undertaking that became dated as soon as it was published. It does contain a lot of useful information and unusual facts but is also lacking in vital information. While it contains an interesting history of the Brownlow Medal it does not list the medal winners. The Magarey and Sandover medals don't even rate a mention. However, there are brief biographies on many of the game's most famous and influential personalities such as Ted Whitten, Bob Skilton, Alex Jesaulenko and Allan Jeans, as well as bizarre sections on things like the game's unluckiest players (Rene Kink played in five Grand Finals without winning one) the wildmen of football (where is Bob Chitty?), the shortest players (Collingwood's James Bradford at 152 cm), the tallest players (Fremantle's Matthew Burton at 210 cm) and the oldest players (St Kilda's Harold Cumberland at 43). There is a handy summary of each team and an amusing back to front photo on page 156 of Carlton's John James flying for a mark. One for the enthusiasts.
