This is quite possibly the greatest book currently in print in the English language, and I only say that because I am an avid Carlton supporter. The book does exactly what it sets out to do and provides an incredibly detailed history of the Carlton Football Club from its inception in 1864 through to the start of the 2002 season. Each season is meticulously dissected providing individual game results, where the club finished on the ladder for the year and a wealth of anecdotes on the club and its players. Needless to say there is much more information available for the more recent years and Hansen has a tendency to go a trifle overboard at times, 40 pages of material just on 2001 was a little too much even for me. Otherwise the book is faultless, finishing with an exhaustive set of facts and figures summarising the history of this most exalted of football clubs. The piece de resistance is of course the replica Team of the Century picture inside the back cover showing Bruce Doull's boot firmly planted on top of that pesky magpie. Surely no true Carlton supporter could exist without a copy of this masterpiece on their shelf.
