The story begins in the town of Caulfield, Ontario with the murder of a French trapper, Laurent Jammet, and the simultaneous disappearance of Mrs Ross's adopted son Francis.
Francis is the main suspect and when officials arrive from the Hudson Bay Company and set out to find Francis, his Mother also heads off into the wilderness, searching for her son. She enlists the help of another suspect, William Parker.
Apart from the search and the story of the murder there are many other stories in the book, running alongside each other, concerning the main officials in the town. As there were so many characters involved I constantly had to look back through the book to remind myself of their stories. Don't let this put you off though as it is worth a read.
Penney gives a real feel for the cold and harsh landscapes of this
wilderness and also a real feel for the close–knit town.
