Protect and Serve

Book Summary by: odette123

Original Author: Richard North Patterson
Being single was always considered as the worst thing to be if you are running for presidency, but Kerry still decided to
offer his name in the poll as President of United States and he wins.  On the day of his acceptance one of his major rival the Chief Justice of the highest court in the land drop dead on his podium and Kerry was now faced with the task of appointing someone else.
Kerry knew that everyone was waiting with baited breathe, waiting for him to do something wrong, something that can kill his presidency before the week was out.  He had several persons, and groups to assure especially those pro-choice groups that have invested not only their time but also their money into his campaign.  He decided to chose a woman, one who is not only clean but had pass through the test and trial of the FBI and the cabinet before, but he did not know that she had a secret, one if known could destroy his presidency before he even started.
During this delicate period the US court was put to the test to decide whether a 15 years old girl should give birth to a baby that has no brain and whose head was filling up with water and thus was getting bigger as the day pass by, the senate had pass a bill two weeks earlier into  law that parents had to give permission for late term abortions.  This 15 years old live with a strictly religious parent who believes that all fetous whether retarded or normal should be born no matter what the situation unless it would kill the parent and that is a chance they were willing to.
After several battle and treats and name calling, it came before the one Judge that it shouldn't have, the appointee of the president .  She knew if she allow the child to have the abortion it  would mean the end of her career and even the president hope for a second term but she still went ahead and give the vote to go ahead with the abortion leaving the president and all who had help her so far in jeopard not only with their family but also with their affiliation.  One person actually lost his daughter because lobbyist decided who they wanted and what they want they should get and they don't care who got hurt in the process.
The book moves slow at first but toward the final several chapter you wont want to put the book down, that is what happen to me.
