e The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is a book i bought because a big book store were having a '3 for 2' deal and i couldn't
see anything else remotely interesting. They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and in this case i would agree as the cover is not the most appealing thing i have ever seen. However something drew me to the book and as i read the blurb i knew why.
The Historian is a novel based on the legend of Count Dracula, both as a blood sucking vampire and as a cruel dictator who impaled his enemies on stakes. It has been written as a series of
letters from father to daughter that can at times get quite confusing but are nevertheless intriguing. The story starts with a young girl finding a book in her fathers study that contains letters from the past. These letters reveal details of a hunt for Dracula's tomb that spans many of the countries of Europe, how vampires were found to still exist, as was Dracula himself, the search for the young girls mother who supposedly died at the hands of the famous vampire and many other incredible storylines that keep you reading even though you know just how incrdible they are!
The
ending becomes even more unbelievable and yet i couldn't put the book down; it has everything from the beautiful but tragic love story to vampire legend, the undead walking the streets, missing professors, lost archives and not to forget the happy ending. This story has many great twists to it that keep you thinking but smiling at the same time. It has happiness, sadness, suspense, true historical facts and quite a few embelishments to add that bit of spice. I would definately recommend The Historian to anyone who wants a great read based on factual history but with anovel new twist to it.
