Buddhist Tought and Meditation in the Nuclear Age

Book Summary by: antubarua

Original Author: Phra Sona Kanti Barua
In this book which has been mainly discussed about Meditation and relationships between Buddhism and Science. Buddhism invites
anyone to come and see for himself and permits him to accept only those facts which agree with reason, logic, and truth. It encourages the seeker of a new way to discard heresies, blind faith, miracles and magic. Principles of Buddhism invite criticism and testing. Buddhism is therefore, the most appealing and most compelling factor that leads the modern minds in the east and west.
Actually Buddhism is the teaching of god Buddha. The Buddha is superior to all beings, human and divine, by his knowledge of the TRUTH. The difference between the Gods and THE BUDDHA lies in the fact the gods rule over their respective worlds whereas the Buddha rules over the whole universe. Buddhism or the teaching of Lord Buddha may be divided into two: (1) philosophical (2) moral or discipline. The two groups are interwoven in such a way that the one can not be understood properly without a knowledge of the other. We live in the period which is dominated by the amazing achievement in the field of science and technology. Every aspect of our daily life is permitted by science and what is today called the “Scientific method” was used over 2526 years ago by the lord Buddha. What the Buddha was not a doctrine but a method of work whereby one comes to see for oneself. Everything exists only in fundamental dependence on everything else. That is why if we finally understand the true nature of our selves we at the same time understand the true nature of everything. But Science cannot give man the control over his mind when he is driven about the selfish desire or animal nature that flares up from within. The Buddha encouraged the wise not to cling to any theories, scientific or otherwise. The scientific mind is exclusively empirical. On the other hand, religious or Buddhist experience cannot be understood in a laboratory through test tubes or under a microscope. Especially in Buddhism such experience can be understood and verified by training the mind to attain a high degree of purification of morality, concentration and insight-wisdom. Even Science cannot teach the common man to control his mind. People talk a lot about science and many things that science has done; but they do not talk about what science can not do. Man began to decry religion; future rewards for moral goodness ceased to interest him and his one desire was the full enjoyment of the present. Science without morality spells like Buddhism can save the world and make it a happy place for people to live in. But Buddhism moves beyond the limitations of science. Buddhist Meditation is the most necessary practice for modern people irrespective of faith and geographical boundaries. Because lack of meditation or mind-development STRESS is now known to be an epidemic disease, either directly or indirectly, to coronary disease heart disease, cancer, lung, ailments accidental injuries, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide, six of the leading causes of death in our mode of life itself, the way we live now. To eradicate the STRESS in our daily life in practicing loving kindness or universal love is extremely important as a guide to a wholesome and satisfactory life.
The formulas are: “May all beings in the West, the North, the South, the North-East, the South-West, the North-West, the South-East, above and below, be free from enmity, ill-will, and anxiety and keep themselves happy”. Meditators should try to concentrate on any single sense-object and must realize the Khandha together with their phenomena in accordance with the four Foundations of Mindfulness, to attain Samadhi or concentration, followed by right understanding or insight wisdom. The path of purification gives other preliminary duties before one undertakes meditation seriously. They are: 1. Purity of Morals 2. Cutting off impediments 3. Finding a suitable place 4. Competent guide 5. Suitable object of meditation 6. Time and posture. It can to make our life peaceful and enjoyable.
