The Visit by friedrich
Durrenmatt share a basic value in human's life. It shows the difference perpesctive of people in
seeing or defining "love". For most of the men in that play, "love" is not the goal of life. It is onle a pleasure in enjoying this short duration of time on earth.
The only thing that men concern in this world is only power and money. Love is just an accessories in life. Men must do anything to get money and power. They must get rid of women, children and love to pursue their enjoyment and satisfaction. This issues are shown by the character named ill and the citizens of Gullen.
Women, instead, such a naif character who dreams of a happiness life of marriage. They are ready to do give anything to please their lover. Love is a divine thing as Claire shows in plot. Their love could be tender or mean. They will try to do their best to please their lover or they will do anything to destroy those who dares to betray her.
Durrematt choice of language is rich of symbolism and is fun to read. Every character represents human
behaviours. He opens elegantly our negatives thoughts and behaviours towards others. He successfully raise consumerism, absurdity of love, greed, hypocrisy, freedom, justice, fatalism, humanism, culturalism, optimism and pessimism issues through this extraordinary drama.
Without intention to offend anybody,
Durrenmatt presents this satire and absurd drama to become a good reflection for us. A must read book!
