One day a man traveled to the lovely city of
Verona in Italy. He met two boys who were selling strawberries. The driver told
the man not to buy them, as the boys
looked poor and dirty. The man bought the fruit as the boys had bright eyes and looked interesting.
The next day the man saw the boys and asked them what they were doing there.
The boys said that they sold newspapers, strawberries, polished shoes and acted as guides to tourists.
Though the boys worked hard and earned a lot, they ate very little and spent little on their needs. The man did not understand why they needed to save so much.
After a few days the man was leaving
Verona and he asked the boys if there was anything he could do for them.
The boys said that they went to their village by bus every Sunday. Maybe he could take them by car on Sunday.
The man drove them to the village. He was surprised when they asked him to stop in front of a big house. The boys went into the building.
The man was curious and he wanted to find out more about the boys. He entered only to find that it was a hospital. He met a nurse and asked her about the boys.
The nurse took the man to a room where a girl was lying in bed.
“This is Lucia, their sister,” she said. “She is being treated for tuberculosis. She will soon be fine. The boys pay for her medicines, food and for her stay here. I don’t know how they manage to pay for everything.”
The boys looked proud when they came out of the hospital. The nurse had told them that their sister would be perfectly alright soon.
