Maria Magdalena, known
like that because of the place she was born in, Magdala, was a girl with a curious mind, always questioning the status of women in her town, but with a great desire to fulfill God’s law and respect her parents plans for her future, as any Jewish girl should…
She finally married a good man selected by her parents and here is where she began to question if all those ritual and ceremonial steps she had to take to purify her body and her soul, many of which were a plain sacrifice was really God’s desire. She realized she had many sins, the most grave were committed against God’s written law, sometimes out of curiosity or neglicence … as if her faith was not so strong, as if she were not afraid of the consequences of proceeding like that or as if doing so was not a fault after all.So when she had to face an important rabbi’s instructions to take away all the demoniac spirits inside her, she again asked herself if all the sacrifices she had to make were really what God wanted. She wanted to know if her sincere and deep repentance was not enough… until she found the answer when meeting Jesus and received from him liberation from her demons and real peace … and a new path to follow when he asked her to follow him as his disciple.
For this decision she was considered a whore since no woman was supposed to spend time alone with a man other than her husband; she was then repudiated by all her family and prohibited to see her only daughter.
She continued preaching Jesus message of a new world for years as all his other disciples did.Inside her there were doubts about her real feelings for Jesus; he noticed that and gave her no hope saying his mission in life had another purpose, and that its fulfillment was just to occur.Disciples hardly understood what he meant for a new world because Jesus words did not declare what exactly was going to happen soon, he just expressed that their faith as they had known it was going to change for ever and that they have to be prepared by leaving their material lives and treat others like brothers.
That was not an easy task since traditional religion saw Christian movement as heretic manifestation punished with prohibition to enter temples and even imprison their leaders for public scandal, as they said.Political leaders finally convinced Romans that Jesus was a menace and sentenced him to be crucified.Maria did not understand why he did not defend himself or run away from his prosecutors; she could not imagine that was God’s desire.
When he was finally crucified, Maria, Jesus’ mother, John and another woman were the only disciples that accompanied Jesus until he was buried in a friend’s personal cemetery all surrounded by gardens. They left him there till the next morning that Maria went to clean and oil him … but she did not find him but an empty tomb. She could not believe it and felt in her knees to cry when she heard his voice calling her, then saw him glowing in light, telling that he was alive and will take care of all of them.He told her to say everybody what she had seen.
She did and continued spreading his message for years and years until she decided to write everything so that future generations know Jesus.
She died as an old woman and her daughter never meet her.
