Traffic is a non fiction book written about the common psychology of every driver. Normally people do not bother about thinking the way they think, one can say metacognition.
This book illustrates the way people deal with the situations in traffic. Every information covered in the book is useful for all. People will be left unmoved by the reasons and logics of the author. Entire drive feels like a news or talk show, where the host will ‘tease’ an interesting bit of information, further discuss about the thing which you don't care, in between run a commercial, and finally in the remaining two minutes give you a perfect climactic answer to the topic which made you sit and watch. As I went on reading the book, I felt as if I have to fine tune my driving skills and the opinion about driving.
Author makes you think about some points which he regularly makes out in the book. For example, as the author says “more accidents are caused in the safer roads”. It appears to be quiet interesting that when a driver feels the road to be safe; it encourages him to drive hazardously. But only statistics and observations can back up this point. Of course there are some places where you feel the statements made by the author are far from the truth particularly when the author compares the risk of traffic with the risk of terrorism. But statistics say that about 40,000 people loose their lives every year because of accidents compared to terrorism where only about 5000 people die due to terrorist attacks. This book helps the readers to realize some of the false impressions that they have while driving or operating their vehicle.
Most of the people believe that they are better drivers than others. Driving is such an essential thing in all parts of the world. The way we drive, how we avoid bad traffic, are so important that we cannot avoid them. I wonder how most of the things the author discusses about the driving, traffic and roads are not even considered to be thought by the people. Some of the common tricks and tips given by the author to avoid accidents are to follow the lane strictly, not to start and move the vehicle quickly when the light turns green, use of proper indicator, maintaining the speed, avoiding single handed driving, judging the mentality of the driver approaching or overtaking you, avoid jaywalking. Many people would feel and hence compare and contrast their driving skills after reading this book. I have realized some of the common errors that I do when I drive the car. Hope this is the case among other readers too.
Totally this book is entertaining yet very informative. Author has written some of the interesting facts about the traffic. In support of the points he writes in the book, author has collected and provided lot of statistics about the traffic. Even though some of the discussions are hard to believe, over all the advocacy of the author makes them thinkable.
