The Night of the Gun by David Carr

Book Review   by:ArijitRoul     Original Author: David Carr

This book is about the reporter who investigates the darkest story of his life. Being a memoir in the book, author David Carr has beautifully narrated how a person addicted to drugs may come across different stages of his life. Being a drunk, doped during most early part of his life, the author has an extra talent to make the people enjoy every bit of the book. It would be quiet relevant to directly discuss the story written by the author rather discussing his writing skills and contrasting the characters.

What if a talented kid without thinking much about the graduation and falls to the habit of smoking and later to cocaine. The same scenario has been recreated by the author. As a journalist he started his career. In the early days of his career, he reported about the police and the other government officials and freebase cocaine during night. Later he hooks up with a woman who deals cocaine. He becomes so addicted to the cocaine that he almost crashes in to a vehicle carrying kids. Due to this he misses his girlfriend’s birthday spending a night in jail. He splits with his girlfriend because of the addiction and carelessness. Even when she was on the urge to give birth to twins, he hands her a crack pipe. Before leaving him, she hands over the kids to him. All these incidents cannot stop the person to quit the bad practices. Moreover he locks his kids in his car and runs to score.

Story takes an interesting way as his best friend call the cops. His friend even points a gun at him when he was out of control. Later the moment becomes the part of the book title.

Even though he has a good job, he is not able to get rid of the addictions and falls into trouble most of the times. Once upon a time holding camera in his hand and interviewing the people he never know and doing the job of investigating journalist, David Carr himself feels pity about his low standards. Later the two girls whom his girlfriend handed before leaving him somewhat become the reason to all drastic changes in his life. In the end he leads a happy life with his new wife and kids. He feels his life so contrasting compared to the earlier days when he was a studious and the circumstances making him fall in to the net of drugs.

Entire incidence in David’s life is comparable with most of the people’s real life. One thing appreciable about the author is that he has shown how to emerge from darker side of the life. Pretty unexpected incidence which would have cost his life becomes the turning point in his life and leads a better life with better family and job. Book covers the complete life cycle slowly and at some point reader may feel the story being elongated. But the overall intention is clear from the author about explaining how he managed to jump up in life.
