This book is a debut best seller from John Grogan. The story tells how important a dog may be in a family. He grew up as a mischievous boy in a catholic family. Entire incidence is covered from 1960s and 70s. He fairly stood up to his parent’s expectations. He recalls his disastrous first confession, roaming with girls despite of his mother’s vigilant radar and similar incidents of his life. He describes how the life is for a mischievous son or daughter and how every child needs the love of his family.
Starting pages of the book describes about author’s traditional family, his catholic school, and his loving parents. It may be recalled from familiar titles similar to this book like the cruel catholic schools. But author has come up with his own touches to the story. Readers may wonder how a boy brought up in such a circumstances may sip wine. Author’s dog Shaun plays an important part in his life. Moreover the dog had grabbed the nickname ‘Saint Shaun’ because of its good behavior. Author’s parents showed an unusual understanding and sensitivity to him. Even they transferred him to a public school thinking he is unfit in the catholic school. The real story starts when he moves with the woman who was to become his wife. His parents had shown a great deal of resistance to marry the woman Jenny. They even write anguished letters to the woman.
Author sometimes expresses unsparingly about his struggles to be himself. But soon he used to see the opposing voice of his parents who wanted to see their son in other way. But he could see some cheers in his life when he was accompanying Jenny. He narrates how the tense moments got lighter when he was being with Jenny. In the entire journey of the book, we could not find even a single situation in which the author commenting the parenting model. Rather he himself analyzes the situation and lets us think deeper about situations. In every story there are three parts. First being me, other being you and the third being the system. The book can be enjoyed in different ways being different parts.
Author describes each difficult situations of his life in a lighter way as to make the reader come out of sentimental clause and take the story in realistic manner. In the last parts of his book he explains about the final days of his father. But the book is a real mixture of humor, sadness, and reality. He explains how the feeling would be for a kid being a son or daughter where the expectations from the parents are high and to a point. He balances the act by the supportive lines acting as a parent and supports parental view to some extent. Overall a great memoir by the author. People would realize the way a traditional family looks like. Characters come and go leaving a large impact on the entire course of the story. A great book to read.
