Main role in the novel is
Edward Curtis, the Legend and highly controversial American Indian
photographer and ethnologist. Author plays herself the
second role in the novel narrating the entire story. She has struggled a lot behind collecting and confirming the facts and the people behind the photographer. When Wiggins started her journey to dig into photographer’s life, she was in love with the ideas of the photographer—the creative, handsome, rugged, self-made frontiersman.
But as she went on with her research, she began to dislike the photographer and almost she was about to drop the project completely. But she managed to retain, and this persistence is indeed an integral part of the book. In search for the story hidden within Curtis, she finds some reforms in herself, moreover on her relationship to her own father. This is a historical novel about the photographer Edward Curtis gradually takes us deep into the psychology of magical people. Wiggins ultimately deliver this novel with a great deal of interest and curiosity. It would have been two novels, first being the Curtis' early years and the second being author's present. The viewing of the story is pure magic and it pops out unexpectedly throughout the book. Author creates a soaring, transcendent and compelling work of a perfect fiction. The way she writes is so breathtaking that sometimes
reader may find himself stopping, closing their eyes, and swallowing the magical moments in the paragraph.
Author begins the novel as the first-person narrator. Wiggins herself is a character in the novel. She returns home after the interview with the photographer to find a series of messages from a hospital in Las Vegas which are too mysterious. She gets a message saying her father being in the ICU of the hospital even though she thinks he committed suicide years ago. Still she is trying to know who the imposter is and the reason he has stolen her father's identity. Thus the mystery begins in the novel. But this is just the beginning as the author also pulls out the stops. But she entertains the reader with great talent of literacy and her writing skills. Sometimes she continues this with some humorous and social commentary hidden behind the movie-making business in Hollywood
Second part of the novel is written in two long sections. In between there is a touch of facts and stories of present day. For some part of the novel a third-person narration is written with completely different style and tone altogether. Sometimes the story feels to be slow. But manages to pick up the pace and make the reader realize why the story was slow moving. Entire focus is on the characterization in the novel. It tells the early days of Edward’s life from the point of view of every person associated with him. Mainly his suffering wife, Clara. Throughout her life, from a woman's point of view, the photographer is unable to mask anything, but of the man who was a legend.
In the end, author does a tremendous work of bringing the complex image of legendary photographer. Before the novel ends, reader feels as if he knows the man for years together.
