Genetic
modification can be used to attain food security. It is because of the genetic modification of “SRI” quality rice
which can withstand prolonged submergence in water. It is worried by skeptics that
genetically engineered plants and bacteria may interbreed with their wild relatives to create superweeds and superpathogens and increased reliance on few traits will diminish genetic diversity. It is also feared that the presence of novel genes in foods might cause allergic responses. But food security is antagonistic to genetic
modification, if we look for the existing indigenous practices and “The One-Straw Revolution” of Mansanobu Fukuoka , the winner of Ramon Magasasay Award for Public service,1988. So, genetic modification is essential, but should be done when indigenous practices fail.
