An Indian Couple living in US suddenly discovers that their little daughter Rumi is a genius in maths.
She is taken to a special school but her father does not like it there and decides to tutor her on his own. Thus starts a new routine for little Rumi. Now, concentrating on studying and going to the library she and her parents are cut off from the normal life and social circle. Rumi, still a child, gets attracted to reading novels while her parents try to make her learn about India as much as and whenever possible. They take a trip to India. The visit to Manasa is an eye opener. For Rumi it is a whole new world. She almost likes it. Back to the States, she watches a Hindi cinema in a theatre. It is “Gandhi” which makes all elders nostalgic and Rumi bored. As Rumi grows up, Along with her sibling, she craves for friends and company. She also gets addicted to eating Cummins. She invites two boys at home to discuss about stamp collection. Her parents are upset and tell her that Indian girls never do such things as they have another kind of morals. As Rumi progresses in her special studies of mathematics she also goes away from her parents. Life becomes more and more intolerable and suffocating. Then there are the pangs of growing up and secret revelations about physical relations between boys and girls. For Rumi it is all exasperating. There is only one course left. To run away from it. And she does run away. The worried parents are confident that their child would return. But Rumi has other worries like, how would she again speak to her parents? And would she be able to bow before their spiritual Guru and confess?
