The Mystery of the Green Spiders

Book Summary by: JohnLendo

Original Authors: Carlos Heitor Cony; Anna Lee

Summarizes a mystery book without tells about its end is a necessary challenge. Why? Because

the most boring thing is to show for a potential reader just that the author is trying to hide. So, go to the challenge! Carol is a smart Brazilian thirteen-year old girl. Her detective instincts awake when her brother Flavinho, eleven-year old, falls from the bicycle and enters into the Miguel Couto Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The old Doctor Araripe plasters up the leg of the boy with an unnecessary gross level of gypsum and recommends that nobody touch it until ten days. Carol considers very strange the medical procedure as well as his excessive number of questions about the boy. After that, Flavinho disappears on the way to his school. On the next day, Carol and her father go to the police department but the police officer doesn´t pay attention to the case. The girl convinces her father to contract a detective. After six days the boy continues disappeared, Carol decides to run her own investigation. Goes back to the Hospital she discovers that Dr. Araripe is retired. After that, she reads a headline in an important newspaper calling that Dr. Araripe has committed suicide and his funeral procession will take place at the Catumbi cemetery. She goes to cemetery with her boyfriend and there suffers a kidnap by strange men using a red car. Carol wake up in a small room where five men ask many questions about her and decide to kill her but not before talk to the Big Boss. Suddenly, at night, the girl takes fire in an old couch. Thanks to the confusion, she escapes to the forest and sleeps there.  In the morning, she hitchhikes until Leblon district where there is a hippie fair and meets a young man called Bob. Carol goes to the Bob´s apartment because she is afraid to go home and puts her family in risk. Flavinho appears suddenly and tells to his parents that he has caught by some men with a red car.  They only exchanged the gypsum on his leg and after six days set loose him next his house. In the hospital, Carol discovers the Dr. Araripe´s cleaner. He tells her that his boss was an addict and had strong gambling debts with a man called Big Boss. He delivers a short letter from Carol to her parents and returns to the hospital bringing money to her. Flavinho follows him and meets his sister there. A young doctor removes the plaster from the Flavinho´s leg and all of them can see that aren´t any fractures on it, only some marks like from spiders. Carol convinces her brother comes back and then the same men from the red car capture her again. The detective contracted by her father discovers that some day before the suicide Dr. Araripe received from Holland a dog with a big tumor on its body. He made a surgery but the animal died. Then the doctor carried the animal in a taxi to bury it in a far place. Carol wake up in a luxurious apartment at the fifth floor of a building that she imagines is located in Copacabana. She receives a call from a man with a charm voice. In despite of his caressing treatment, she wants to know why she is his prisoner and when he will liberate her. He answers that can satisfy her only with the first question. The girl is conduced to the same room of the Big Boss, a man wearing an impeccable white coat, seems a millionaire. He explains that her brother was free and everything was walking to a happy end but her curiosity makes an enormous damage. He talks about the mystery that I, obviously, won´t reveal. Then he says that unfortunately he will eliminate her because she knows everything. Carol returns to the same luxurious room while the Big Boss decides the best way to kill her without suffering. She makes good use of her time trying to discover a way to take off the situation in which she is facing thanks of her detective mania. Well, at this point I fulfill my challenge to summarize the book without reveal the mystery. Take it easy because the girl achieves to escape thanks of two pillows, one sheet and one red lipstick. To grow your curiosity I give more two tips: Dr. Araripe commits suicide because of his addict, but his gambling debts with the Big Boss are paid thanks of the dog arrived from Holland and the plastered leg with green spiders marks. Elementary, dear Watson!
