My Sister''s Keeper

Book Review   by:Joana94     Original Author: Jodi Picoult

This abstract was translated from Para a Minha Irmã

The names that I consider more important in this history are: Anna, Kate, Sara, Brian and Campbell. All very different but that are in the same place, at the same hour and with the same purpose.
Since a child, Anna feels like she is in the wrong family. She is red and she has lots of freckles while all her family is the opposite. This happens because she was genetically programmed. Her parents chose her gender such as the positioning of her chromossomes with the aim of making her compatible with Kate, her older sister.
Kate was still a baby when she was diagnosed with leukemia. All the blood that she received wasn''t sufficient, she always needed more. Weak and insecure she deals with her illness with all the forces that she has. In order to survive, it was necessary the concepcion of a sister entirely compatible.
Sara and Brian are married and also are the parents of this two girls. They deal with the ilness of Kate and later with the weakness of Anna.
On the other hand, Campell is our mistery character. He "melts his heart" and becomes sensitive about the situation in which he finds himself involved.
At thirteen, Anna decides to make a petition against her parents with the intention of  obtaining her medical emancipation. She felt lonely because all atention was focused on Kate. Kate due to her illness requires a lot of Anna. Cells, platelets, lots of blood... That''s why Anna doesn''t feel like the owner of her body. Tired of that situation, she decides to change her future and fight.
That''s when Campbell appears, a lawyer that decides to save her. Anna without money and without her family support, volunteers to clean the door handles of Campbell''s office. He likes the history of Anna and promisses to help her.
After many problems overcome, Anna finally has her right to go to the court, with Campbell by her side.
Together, they won the case and now Anna has the decision of helping her sister in her hands.
Unfortunatelly, when Anna and Campbell where backing home, they had a road accident and Anna died. Later, in the hospital (where Kate was), it''s done a question: "Do you want your daughter''s organs to be donated?" The answer given by Sara and Brian was simple: "Yes, there is a girl on the top floor that needs them urgently."

The book ends with a small letter from Kate, many years after the incident, explaining how much she feels grateful for what her sister did for her. Anna fulfilled her purpose in life, save Kate.
''I think about her kidney working within me and her blood running through my veins. I take her with me, wherever I go''
