Book Review by: punitha

Golden Era of Vijayanagara Empire
In the 14th century India witnessed the birth of Vijayanagara Kingdom in southern
part of India. It protested and protected the Hinduism from Muslim domination. For almost 200 years it nurtured Hinduism. It faced many wars with bahamani Kingdom. Bahamani was divided into 5 small kingdoms which culminated its fighting power. Vijayanagara kings took complete advantage of this situation and conquered complete southern part of India. Among the vijayanagara Kings Sri Krishnadeva Raya was the most famous king. He had trade relations with Portuguese. Many foreign visitors have praised his administration abilities. It is believed that this was the golden era where all its citizens lived a very happy life. Gold, Pearls, Diamonds and corals were traded in open markets. Under his regime many temples, forts, bridges, dams and community places were constructed. The kingdom did not have its impact on northern part of India. Even today Hampi stands out speaking about its past glory and fine architectural engineering abilities. Many poets and artists emerged and made life much beautiful. The death of Sri Krishnadeva raya weakened the kingdom. But even today the chariot at hampi stands as the most beautiful monument. People interested in knowing about the past culture and students of history do have a lot of learn from this place. Hampi is situated in Bellary district of Karnataka State. It is 423 km from Bangalore. It is connected by train and road from Bangalore. I would suggest the reader to visit this place once in life time and learn the history.
