www.writewords.org.uk is an online writer's community founded by three professional writers in 2002 with the aim of offering
a comprehensive service for poetry, theatre, film and television, novelists and short story writers. The site is now a thriving and supportive place for writers of all levels of
experience and from all over the world. The site offers different levels of
membership, starting with a free monthly trial, moving to part-membership (currently costing UKP 20 per year and the option of subscribing either to the jobs board or the directory) and full membership (GBP 35 per year with access to all the site features). Like many similar writer’s websites, Writewords features a 'Jobs and Opportunities' section that is regularly updated to include a variety of opportunities from writing competitions, to internships to paid writing work. The directory section includes listings for film and television producers, producing theatre companies, magazines and other publications. There are regular interviews with prominent writers, agents and producers, with no bias towards a particular type of writing.
What makes Writewords unique is the supportive spirit of its membership. There are numerous writing groups from short story writing to horror writing, with up to 15 members in each group and a group host. Membership of the groups is free to full members and trial members, though interested parties must apply to each individual group for membership. The groups are a place to post work and receive feedback from other members, and post information on the group message board. Aside from the writer's group forums, there are several other forums, divided into topics such as 'Favourite Writing', 'Technique', 'Inspiration and Ideas' and 'Competitions'. A new addition is a commercial noticeboard were members can advertise their services for free and non-members pay a small fee to advertise. Discussion on the noticeboards is active, lively and entertaining as well as informative. Writewords also has a bank of 'Site Experts' - with experience in many different areas of professional writing – who are always on hand to offer advice and input.
The site overall is easy to navigate and well moderated and is a great resource for writers of all media and of varying levels of experience.
