Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is a thrilling science fiction novel.
It takes place in George Lucas' Star Wars universe, which was made
hugely popular by the widely renowned movie trilogy. This book recounts
the events that happen between The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) and
Return of the Jedi (Episode VI). Major movie characters Luke Skywalker,
Princess Leia Organa, Lando Calrissian, Darth Vader, and Emporer
Palpatine play major roles, and some new characters are also
introduced. Prince Xizor is a new force for evil, as he is the head of
the galaxy-spanning Black Sun criminal syndicate. A rival with Darth
Vader for the Emporer's favor, he has unlimited resources to find and
destory the hero, Luke Skywalker. With the assistance of his human
replica droid Guri, he is the ultimate sophisticated killer.
But Skywalker is not without help. Dash Rendar is a smuggler like Han
Solo, and though he is motivated by credits and not love, he has his
own grudge against the evil Galactic Empire. We also meet several
unsavory characters from the underworld, some who help our heros and
some who hinder.
As we all remember from the end of The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo
has been captured by the Dark Lord Vader and the bounty hunter Boba
Frozen and encased in a block of carbonite, he is on his way to
be turned in to Jabba the Hutt on the planet Tattooine. Luke, Leia, and
the others are trying to track him down, some of them staying on
Tattooine and waiting to intercept. Meanwhile, Prince Xizor has learned
of Darth Vader's desire to capture Luke Skywalker alive. He decides
that the best thing for him to do will be to assassinate Luke and let
Vader take the blame for it. Princess Leia, on the other hand, figures
that the best way to track down Han, as well as learn who is gunning
for Luke, is to go to Black Sun for aid. To further complicate matters,
Xizor has taken a liking to Leia and is intent on seducing her.
With locations across the galaxy, from the underworld to the most
prestigious halls of power, Shadows of the Empire is not a book for any
Star Wars fan to miss.
