It's not Your Fault Koko Bear

Book Review by: Kim

Original Author: Vicki Lansky
It’s Not Your Fault Koko Bear by Vicki Lansky is an excellent book for parents to read to their children about separation
and divorce. It is written for the 4 to 6 year old child with notes at the bottom of each page for the parents. It is a read-together book about a bear family going through a divorce. At the story's beginning, Koko is very confused and concerned about the family. However, at the end of the book, Koko realises that she can handle the new living arrangements.
In the story the father and mother bear tell the child they are separating. The father leaves the home and Koko bear is sad. The father comes back and invites Koko Bear to his new apartment. They resume their father and child relationship. Each episode in the story is separated by a section where the child is asked questions: How do you think Koko feels ? Do you have feelings like Kokos ? What could Koko's parent's do to help her feel better ?
The notes at the bottom of each page guide the parents through the process of helping a child with their feelings about separation and divorce. At the end of the book, Koko Bear discovers that they are still a family, just a family not living in the same house.
It’s Not Your Fault Koko Bear is an excellent book for a parent helping a child with parental separation or divorce. It is a read-together book which gives the parent time to explain any questions the child might have. The story is written at a child's level of understanding.
