Total Immersion, Swimming

Book Review by: PJ

Original Authors: Terry Laughlin; John Delves
Written for swimmers from beginner to Olympic hopeful alike, “Total Immersion” describes “The Revolutionary
Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier.”
The author, Terry Laughlin, portrays swimming in a manner that dispels common swimming myths, poor swimming technique, and fruitless training through examples derived from the Olympics, basic physics, and boat design.
Once the misconceptions about swimming are dispelled, theories about proper swimming technique are developed using naval architecture, physics, and research as evidence. Conceptual understanding of each theory is essential for understanding the purpose behind specific drills used later in the book.
Throughout each chapter, analogies between swimming and other sports help readers relate and understand differences. Unlike many sports, swimming cannot be improved upon simply by working or pushing oneself harder. Becoming a skilled and faster swimmer is closer to studying martial arts where technique must be mastered before adding power.
After a thorough introduction to the art of swimming a series of drills are demonstrated to help learn the basic movements. As with most sports, drills are designed to make each movement instinctive and subconscious. Mastering drills in combination with a proper training plan and mental focus will help swimmers improve continuously regardless of their initial skill level.
Part two of the book is dedicated to expected topics including solo and group training, pool etiquette, injury prevention, and weight loss. Lastly, the author discusses how swimming has enriched his life, and provides useful concepts about the pursuit of perfection and enrichment. Through swimming one can develop the same mental focus and clarity found during the practice of Yoga or Pilates.
The appendix contains practice sets, skill specific drills, and a workout plan that culminates with a mile swim. In addition, lists of free online resources are referenced along with study aides, DVDs, and other books recommended by the author.
