Italian Painting

Book Review   by:stopmaster     Original Author: ed: NIgel Rodgers
ª

Art book "Italian Painting" published by Electa, Milan,1997,English language edition by Konemann, Cologne, 1998
Editor: Nigel Rodgers
Translation from the Italian: Elizabeth Clegg
399 pages, ISBN 3-8290-0490-7
This beautiful book covers Italian painting from 14th to 20th century with comprehensive index of titles and artists, 6 page table of all painters lifespan put in perspective.
Introduction to each chapter tells the reader about that particular century in its artistic aspect, mutual influencies, social and cultural background.
Every artist`s short biography precedes reproductions of his (her) work .
And quality of these reproductions is what sets this book above many others of its kind.
Vividly bright colors, gradations of light and – most important- shadows
are printed faithfully close to the originals.
I was lucky to view some of the original pictures in Brera Gallery, Milano
and reproductions in "Italian Painting" come amazingly close to these works.
In my opinion when evaluating an art book (Printed in Italy) line guarantees
consistently high quality.
Most of these works are well known to art lovers everywhere but seeing
it all together gives reader real pleasure.
I highly recommend this volume to anyone looking for beauty and genius in this world.
