Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager

Book Review by: DrSarbjitSingh

Original Author: Ken Blanchard , Susan Fowler, Laurence Hawkins
Abstract: Ken Blanchard, the management Guru explores leadership traits, like knowledge power, competence, commitment, collaboration,
empowerment of work force and continuous self improvement for climbing the corporate ladder. Situational self leadership is must for an effective leader to succeed in today’s era of technological revolution, globalization and customer driven market. The three best authors and thinkers have highlighted how management principles – self power, freedom from assumed constraints, sense of ownership and initiative help in leading your team from the front and creating positive impact on superiors, peers and subordinates. The era of permanent and loyal employees is gone and today’s employers are looking for skilled people who are ready to undertake larger span of control, quickly learn new skills and deliver cost-efficient solution of a problem. Similarly, workforce expects more and more empowerment, transparency and opportunities within the organization to learn new skills and contribute significantly to their present / new job. The authors have brilliantly covered a story of Steve, a young advertising executive, who could have lost his job due to poor presentation of his business proposal to his clients until he met a God sent magician named Cayla. It is through simple conversation that Cayla reminded Steve that as an executive he must own responsibility for the situation and move on instead of blaming others and getting dejected. Through progressive and frank interaction with his team mates and guidance from Cayla, Steve learned to shed assumed constraints, be an achiever through continuous process of learning, improving, performing, delegating, monitoring and directing. Ken Blanchard's leadership principles of empowerment and “The Needs Model” can be mastered by any sincere leader to enhance his/her command and control on his/her workforce and increase productivity, job satisfaction, and career advancement. This approach will help individual leaders to become proactive and great contributors for achieving organizational goals.
