Nineteen Eighty-Four

Book Review by: candid

Original Author: Orwell, George
This is an intriguing political satire that make one think long and hard about the way governments are run in this world.
Written with a caustic wit and keen sense of observation, It is a doomsday vision of how the year 1984 was percieved to be almost a century ago. The author creates a totalitarian society where the dictats of the big brother, a pseudo nazi-fascist, rule the roost. The book holds you in a trance as you enter a repulsive scenario where free thought is banned and sycophancy the name of the game.
The author creates hilarious concepts such as thought crime, thought police who aim at curbing all kinds of free thinking. Four ministries run this virtual hell. Ministry of love that plans constant wars, ministry of plenty which makes all consumer goods unreachable for the common man, etc etc.
Love and sex are unthinkable unless it is to produce children who are taken over by the Big Brother. The protagonist embarks on a clandestine affair with a femme fatale who claims to have slept with 60 members of the so called inner circle that condones sexual relations.
Thus in this anarchic apocalypse, the very fabric of human spirit is shown degrading. Till in the end the protaginist too loses his joie de vivre and gives in. A very thought provoking piece of fiction that startles you and makes you thank God that 1984 indeed did not turn out that way. A masterpiece in the genre of political satires and dystopia being effectively used to create an eye opening novel.
