Pride and Prejudice

Book Review by: Yoyo

Original Author: Jane Austen
Based on the 18th century, this novel by Jane Austin brings out the
society of Victorian Age, where woman were more
conventional. There is
a couple Mr. and Mrs. Bennet who have five daughters- Jane, Elisabeth,
Mary, Kitty and Lydia. Mrs. Bennett’s only aim in life is to get her
daughters married to wealthy men.The story proceeds further
with the arrival of one rich man Mr. Bingley, his sisters and his best
friend Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is the main protagonist of the story and
his leading lady is Elisabeth.Mrs. Bennet tries her level best
to start a courtship between Mr. Bingley and her eldest daughter Jane.
Mr. Bingley comes out to be a very friendly natured man as opposed to
his rather serious friend Mr. Darcy.Elisabeth is not a
conventional Victorian age woman but is seen as a rebel. She is
intelligent, lively and witty. She has her own opinion about almost
everything. She perceives Mr. Darcy to be very arrogant and proud man.
Most of her perception about him is based on what other people think
about him. Especially of one Mr. Wilkham who happens to be Mr. Darcy’s
enemy. She becomes prejudiced about him and he in turn sees her as a
proud woman who is very hard to get.To make the situation
worse, Mr. Darcy thinks that Jane is not a suitable partner for his
friend Mr. Bingley. Mr. Bingley likes Jane but he takes his friends
opinion about her and leaves her. Elisabeth is furious when she comes
to know this and hates Mr. Darcy more.Initially, Elisabeth is
drawn towards Mr. Wilkham but he gives her a shock by eloping with her
youngest sister Lydia. She finds out that Mr. Wilkham is not a good
man. Darcy helps her find her sister and gets Mr.Wilkham to marry
Lydia. Elisabeth then changes her opinion towards Mr. Darcy and they
fall in love. The story has a happy ending with Mr. Bingley getting married to Jane and Darcy to Elisabeth.
