AFRICAN CHILD

Book Review by: EROMONSELE

Original Author: CAMARA LAYE
> This novel can be seen from five places
1. The beauty of African tradition and power: In the
beauty of African tradition and power, the novel tells
us
about the importance of African culture and tradition.
This
is shown by giving the description or the tradition of
the
people.
The snake and the mystery surrounding it prepare
the
readers mind to the Africa conception of super natural
relationship between human beings and animals. The
initiation into the society of the unit into manhood
with
the rites involving further reveal of Africa commitment
and
culture.
2.The novel also tells how Africans received and accept
people into their midst or foll without stress. The
child
father’s kindness and open minded shows this, also the
way
uncle Momodu and his family treated the child living
with
them also shows this. The child even remark “how he was
a
brother to me than an uncle” when talking to his
younger
uncle Sekou.
3.The novel tells us about parallel differences between
African believe and culture in constract to European
way of
life. Kouroussa and Tindican symbolizes African setting
while the school and uncle’s house in Konokry
symbolizes
European way of life.
4 In addition, the novel shows intermittent absence
from
home. The child’s schooling in Conkry separated from
his
family and friends. This gave the child a mixed
feelings,
the feelings he gets from being away from home is
enough
for Tindican and regular journey from France.
5.Finally it showed pampered love by the child’s
mother,
the cultured love shows by his father, love among the
three
friends and also platonic undefined love the child and
Marie holds the key to the peaceful co-
existence.
He buttresses his point thus “it seems to me life of
Africans………….more often open to love……………The love which
unites us closely to each other.
