How does one go about describing their all-time favorite
book? Although C.S. Lewis wrote "The Chronicles of Narnia" for
children, the messages these books embrace will delight
readers of all ages. "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" is actually No. 2 in the 7 book series, but seems to serve as the introductory volume for many first-time "Narnia" readers. Lewis, a well known Christian apologist in Britain in the mid-twentieth century, does not try to the hide the fact that this book is an allegory based upon the redemptive
story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. But non-Christian readers will not be any more offended by the story than the millions of J.R.R. Tolkein fans were by "The Lord of the Rings". "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" is centered around the discovery of the enchanted land of Narnia by four siblings: Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie. When one of the children is lured into servitude to the White Witch, the others must seek the help of Aslan, Son of the King over the sea. What they find is a land of mythical creatures, talking beasts, and secrets much older than anyone can remember. Aslan takes up their cause, but at a cost much dearer than anyone had ever imagined. The book climaxes in a great epic battle between the
good forces of Aslan, under the leadership of Peter and the wicked forces, under the leadership of the White Witch. Although this story of good vs.
evil has been told many times in many forms, C. S. Lewis has been able to create a world of absolute truths where good is unspoiled and evil is not pretty. This is a refreshing escape in a world where right and wrong sometimes get stirred into the same pot. Please make no mistake, Lewis has not painted a picture of perfect children, far from it. As a matter of fact, as one follows the 7 book series one realizes that many of the adventures, even the introduction of evil into the world of Narnia are the products of human tampering. Before Hollywood rewrites these fine children's classics into an action-film, make sure you read the originals so the true message is not lost.
