Greek Mythology

Book Review by: elbrown

Original Authors: Evslin; Hoopes
Greek Mythology is a very fascinating study. So many different stories build up on eachother as each one explains something
different. It is so difficult to say something about Greek Mythology without offending someone who may be very passionate about it. However, it would also be offensive to say something to any other type of belief. However, I digress from this point.
Cronos was the father of time. He ruled for many eternities with his wife, Rhea. Cronos was a very jealous God and refused to let Rhea bare child because prophesy said he would die by the hand of his child as he had killed his father for the throne. For this reason he swallowed five of his children one by one devouring them all. Rhea then came up with a plan against Cronos. She vowed he would not let him have her next and last baby. She crept down to earth and gave him to a shepherd family to raise for her time being. She then went back to Olympus and wrapped a rock in a bundle of clothing. Cronos, waking up from his mighty sleep, grabbed what he thought was the infant and swallowed it whole.
After some time Rhea became lonely for her son and stole down to earth and brought him back introducing him to Cronos as the new cupbearer. Cronos loved the boy only because he was beautiful which was a trait found very useful for gods.
Cronos however, did not know he was about to lose all. One night, Rhea and Zues mixed together a poison drink which contained honey nectar, salt, and mustard and gave it to Cronos when he awoke in the morning. With a mighty chug he vomited all of Zues's brothers and sisters who immediately voted him leader and they went into battle against Cronos. Cronos, realizing he had been tricked, went to his half brothers, the titans, and prepared for a last minute battle against his family.
Zues was not ill prepared either. He now had the strength of his family and he had gone into the shadows of the mountains where secrets had been kept by his father for years and years. His cousins, the cyclops were extremely ugly creatures, but very capable of a fight when necessary so Zues unhooked them and they went into battle.
No one knows what happened to old Cronos. Some say he was killed in the same way Oranos, (Cronos's father) was killed by him with the scythe. However, he was defeated and the young gods took over Olympus and decided what was theirs. Zues, like Cronos married his sister Hera and he became God of the skies and ruled for many millenia. He had many lovers and many children though few of them entered olympus. Those children were Artemis, Apollo, Hermes, and Athene.
