GHOST IN UP VILLAGE

Book Review by: ishika

Panic after ‘ghost’ stalks village in UP

Last week 23-year-old
Santosh was sleeping with her husband and newborn son in her dingy room with the door firmly locked. When she woke up, her waist-long plait had been snipped off and the young woman was left with shoulder-length hair. The door was still firmly locked.

Two days later, Mohammed Asif was sleeping in his house with his family when the thatched roof suddenly caught fire at around midnight. The family scrambled for cover and no one seems to know how the roof caught fire. Two sisters, Vibha and Abha, fought with each other because someone had cut large holes in all their clothes in the trunk with a pair of scissors. The sisters initially blamed each other, till they realised that it was someone else who had done the job.
Incidents like these have been talking place at Kutesara village in Muzaffarnagar district over the past two weeks and villagers now firmly believe that an unseen ghost is stalking the area. “When such incidents began taking place we thought it was the handiwork of some prankster. We kept night-long vigil and now we believe that it is some evil spirit that is stalking the village.
At least two dozen women have had their hair snipped off, and several others have had their clothes cut up in pieces. Roofs of houses suddenly catch fire and utensils fall down on their own,” says Tazim Tyagi, the village pradhan.
Kutesara village has a population of about 7,000 and people have now started migrating from the village. The local administration has deployed the police in the village, but the presence of the men in khaki does not seem to have made any difference.
