Following the success of her best-selling
book "Longitude" ,Dava
sobel , a former New York Times science reporter , has turned herself to the
planets proiducing a too good
descriptions about the members of the solar system.
Sobel starts with preliminary facts about the planets , pointing out differences in astrology &
amp; astronomy .She traces Galileo's discovery of Jupiters moons in 1610 & the far more recent discoveries made there by his namesake , the Galileo spacecraft. Jupiter has no surface , it is a gas envelope swirling with counter directional weather bands that compress themselves into a liquid around a solid core of Hydrogen , the lightest element .
Her colourful depictions of the planet's surfaces & descriptions with explanation of their inner structures constitutes a large part of this book. The fans of
"Longitude" ,will be happy knowing that this book also contains few human stories , from those of the astronomers to those of the explorers who used their findings to guide them around the globe.
It is a fascinating read
