Just how innocent is
innocence? This is the question asked by William Golding in his Book 'Lord of the Flies'. This classic
is about a group of English boys who find themselves stuck on an unnamed island when their plane is shot down in flight over the Pacific Ocean. The Pilot of the plane dies but the boys
survive and are alone on the uninhabited island without adult supervision. Ralph and Jack are the older of the boys though opposites in character. Ralph who is elected the Chief is a sensible boy who tries to set rules and order, using a conch shell that he has found. Jack Merridew on the other hand is a dictator and very agressive boy who believes in torturing anyone, including the youngest of the boys. The story will keep you off the edge of your seat as William Golding skillfully grapples with
innocence trying to survive without supervision. The rest of the boys, with the exception of Ralph, Piggy, Simon and the twins, degenerate into savages who murder each other and set the island on fire. This gripping story stands out as a real masterpiece. How long can innocence and order survive without authority? Is man inherently evil and only waiting for an opportunity to show it?
