This fiction takes place in London,West End.This fiction about the two brothers called Gesslers brothers.They have to make fine quality boots in two small shops are sit together .The two shops were like the "church" and it means a lot to them.The elder brother has great industry,devoted to his work and work silently.For them,boot_making is an art and the leatheris" the soul"of them.Once big firms starts competition with Gesslers brothers.As a result they start losing business. The Gesslers brothers are forced to give up part of their shop to a new firm,after that the elder brother dies.The younger brother continue to make the quality bootd and refuse to give up boot_making as an art.The younger brother slowly dies from starvation.The big firms take over and change the name of the shop.
The fiction narrated by thefirst person narration .This has advantages and disadvantages.The advantages are that the auther is allowed to givereadermore details(behaviour,appearance,state of mind) and eyewitness report.The disadvantages are thatreaders arelimited to the perspective view of narrator,readercan not verify details and facts andthe author maybe not objective and baised to one side than other.
The internal conflictis if the Gesslers brothers shouldgiveup their ideal?Should they compromise and make boots the way rhe big firm are doing?Should they continue making quality boots?
The climax starts when the elder brothers dies and theyounger brother starts suffering.
The theme for this story is that some people who make moral choices based upon moral values do not usually win at the end.
The author uses manysymbolism in this fiction such as",the church" to show how the two shops have a big value to the Gesslers brothers,and the word "the soul" instead of the leather to show also that it is connected tothemby their souls.
