There’s a time for loneliness… A solitary walk in the woods or an afternoon of meditation in a desert beach can be very pleasant. Some people need to withdraw from the world, because they are fed up with life, they miss calm, they want to take stock and to escape from some clinging and annoying people.. they are stifled! Some others are suffering in their corners, waiting for a call or a «toc toc» on the door.. A terrible desertion’s sensation which itches. They need to talk, to share their joys and sorrows, to exchange, to confess, to have fun… This loneliness is going to metamorphose into sadness, then to a nervous breakdown and perhaps to a suicide! We need each other. A prolonged loneliness will be harmful for physical and mental health. The real loner, «the hermit», who prefers his own company is a rare individual. A solid network of parents and friends can help us to overcome stress and to escape from depression, anguish and many psychological troubles. It has been proved that a social life increases life expectancy and decreases risks of cancers, heart attaks and many other illnesses. Friends are a source of happiness. They’re very important for young people, especially during adolescence and for the elderlies who are often isolated by the retirement or the bereavement. We don’t know exactly how friendship protects our physical and mental hearlth. Some psychologists have as hypothesis that friends act such as plugs which isolate us from stress. Their love and esteem keep alive essential reserves of our wellbeing: our pride. But people aren’t the only creatures who can help us to break loneliness. The animal is an excellent companion. Dogs are wellknown for their unconditional attachment to their masters. Cats are a bit more difficult to satisfy but they require less attention than dogs because they’re independant. Think also about birds and fishs. The choice of an animal depends on our personality, but the presence of any domestic animal, with hair or feather, is good for health! a study proved that animals owners were five times larger to still be alive one year after a heart attack then sick people without animals. Like friends, animals make us get out of shell.. they establish a bond with us and rely on us. We can talk to them: even if they don’t reply, they’re excellent confidants.
