India became independent more than half a century ago. Politically, financially and educationally it is a slave even today. Here, I am not about to discuss this issue but the social plight of Indian
women.
Woman is the ‘Janani’ of mankind; meaning one who gives life to another human being. This being can be a male or a
female. Yes, woman is the enemy of woman in the world. But to worsen her condition, Man is the biggest traitor to a woman. He has viewed her, views her and will always view her as the weaker section of the society. He will always suppress her and harass her. Times in memorial, woman has never been universally accepted as par with the males. Even the most educated men wish to see her as a submissive persona. Let’s study Indian woman and her condition at various stages of her life;Female Infanticide- Indians perceive a female
child as a liability for whom they need to save lakhs of rupees as a future bride. People kill a female child in the
mother’s womb, not realizing that a woman has given them the fortune to see and enjoy this beautiful world. They forget that they have their mother and sisters who are also the womenfolk. How can a man deny the will of God and do such a cruel act? But he does!A girl grows up in the shelter of her father figure or her or brother figure. She is watched and again subdued. Her verbal powers are controlled especially in front of the society. She cannot play freely or laugh and dance at her will. She is educated to a basic degree level. Her future is taught to her by heart, which is marriage at the
age of puberty. Freedom of expression and thought are limited by her parents. She is wed to a man the day she grows 21 years old.In-
Laws - A new family and a completely new environment! Restricted freedom (less than her maternal home)! She is expected only to give birth and serve her in-laws. She cannot have a dream to live or enjoy the fresh air. The in-laws and her husband make decisions for her. If she is bold and does follow her dreams, she is abused and declared insane. If she cannot bear a child, she is cursed and unwanted. When she is nurturing her children to growth she is homebound. Her life is over. When age comes to her she is at the mercy of her children and her husband. Contrary, if she is allowed to pursue her dreams she becomes a very successful wife, mother and a career woman. Man fears that she may surpass him professionally, which happens. A woman can fulfill her family and career commitments better than a man. Men know this and hence in fear, keep her in pressure and boundations. The above are facts and experiences of my near and dear ones. I feel helpless and sad. Recently laws have been passed for the welfare of women but how many have the strength to raise their voices against the tortures they have suffered. She loses all her strength with age and by the treatment she has been given all through her life. I pray that women wake up and realize their powers and rights. Only she can come and fight for herself own self. No one will come to her rescue. It is true that if the real woman rises inside her, she becomes Goddess Kali. Then what is left for man, but to seek her forgiveness. So, Man, respect her, love and simply not possess her. HEY WOMAN, RISE AND SHINE!
