Great Works of Biblical Art
Douglas Mannering’s Great Works of Biblical ArtMany nonbelievers use Biblical proverbs and turns of speech, and
Biblical characters from Adam onward loom large in popular consciousness. Religious art has taken many forms-mosaic, stained glass, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, panels, canvas, walls. Some artists were told what to paint. Others, such as William Blake, worked from personal visions. And the Bible has many stories people wanted to paint-"not every Biblical painting is entirely spiritual in its inspiration" (p6). This book presents Biblical art in the sequence of the Bible stories, not in the order in which the artistic pieces were created. But each piece is dated, so their sequence can be understood, as also the development in concept and technique.
