Sex and the City

Book Review by: szma0011

Original Author: Candace Bushnell
This abstract was translated from Seks w wielkim mieście
"Sex and the City" is the bestselling bookin the feminine literature. Of course, the question can be asked if it is due to
thelarge popularity of the film series with the same title. The book is based on the feuilleton of Bushnell from the sexual affairs column in the "New York Observer" and this is the reason of some narrative incoherence, which can be very easy experienced by the reader. The people presented in the book are rich New Yorkers, whose main task is visiting different parties and modern pubs. They live in a pure world of the meaningless relations and connections. For instance, Carrie, a young writer, still looking for love and her partner, Mr Big, also looking for the big feeling. The same holds true for Samantha Jones, an older film producer. Carrie Bradshaw is often compared to Bridget Jones or Ally MacBeal, however, the book by Bushnell is much worse than "Bridget Jones's Diary" or the famous series about the lawyer from New York. We can only ask the question if it was the concious objective of Bushnell to writea book as boring as "Sex and the City" as it becomes an "ambitious" book which is going to be read very hard, trying to overcome the tiredness and looking for a deeper meaning which actually does not exist. It is hard to believe but this imperfect book had been a basis for a worldwide popular series, which wasawarded with2 Golden Globes and got 11 nominations for Emmy Awards.
