The Catholic Verses

Book Review by: NissaAnnakindt

Original Author: Dave Armstrong
Subtitled '95 Bible Passages That Confound Protestants', this book is a series of in-depth Bible studies of those passages
which Protestants and Catholics interpret differently. The number '95' intentionally calls to mind the 95 anti-Catholic theses (topics) tacked to a Wittenburg church door by Martin Luther, which ignited the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century. This book covers: The Church, Denominationalism, Bible and Tradition, The Papacy, Judgment and Good Works, Baptism, the Eucharist, Penance, Relics, Purgatory, Celibacy, the Virgin Mary, and more. In order to give both the Protestant and the Catholic viewpoint for each Bible passage examined, Armstrong often quotes from the Reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin. For the Catholic viewpoint he doesn't rely on quotes from the Early Church Fathers or other Catholic authorities, but on the plain sense of the Bible passages themselves. The author, Dave Armstrong, was a Protestant campus missionary who became a Catholic in 1991. He is the author of a number of books defending the Catholic faith on the basis of the Bible. This book is excellent for anyone, of any faith, who wants to understand the basis for the division of Christianity into different denominations. It would be useful to Protestant evangelists who want to witness to unsaved people of Catholic upbringing, as well as for its main purpose of helping Catholics evangelize and defend their faith when speaking to or evangelizing with non-Catholics.
