Secret of the Wolf

Book Review by: Serenity Baxter

Original Author: Susan Krinard
A psychiatrist attempts to cure an alcoholic werewolf suffering from multiple personality disorder. Johanna Schnell believes
that hypnosis can treat some forms of mental illness. She has founded Haven, an asylum for the emotionally disturbed and has enjoyed some success with the few patients in her care including a shell-shocked soldier, a mentally challenged boy and an abused young girl. Some of the locals are uneasy about the crazies in their midst, but most are tolerant. When Johanna literally stumbles over a man passed out in the forest, she takes him to Haven and tries to help him. Quentin Forster has been experiencing blackouts since he left the army three years ago. He often awakens in a strange place with the uneasy feeling that he has done something terrible but he cannot remember what. His amnesia is getting steadily worse and he fears that he may be losing touch with reality. Reluctantly, he agrees to let Johanna hypnotize him and try to confront his subconscious fears. He also hopes to discover the cause of his blackouts. While in a trance, Quentin reveals his grandfather’s abuse during his childhood, his amnesia during army battles and his blackouts since his discharge. He also claims to be a werewolf. Johanna has never treated a patient suffering delusions of lycanthropy or schizophrenia; so, she decides to consult with another physician who has recently moved to the area. Johanna does not realize that Quentin really is a werewolf. So is the new doctor. He has met Quentin before. The two of them have unfinished business together. With a brainy beauty and a mentally ill beast, this historical romance set in California during the late 1800s presents an entertaining new spin on an endearing old story.
