takes you into Chinese culture, both in China and America, showinghow the different worlds clash, and how difficult it can be to be tounderstand why your daughters have different values and ideals to thoseyou where brought up with yourself.It is difficult, at times, to keep up with who is talking, but the stories are so breathtaking, it is worth reading.One of the women is promised in marriage to another child at the age of2. After her family's home is destroyed in a flood when she is12, she is delivered to her future husband's home and is expected tospend the rest of her days there. Even if her husband dies, shewill never be able to remarry.Her daughter becomes at chess prodigy when she is only 9 yearsold. Her mother encourages her talent and takes her totournaments, which she often wins. After her mother embarrassesher in a shop, she refuses to play. Both mother and daughter areso stubborn and are unable to admit that they are wrong, therefore shenever plays chess again.A fascinating book that will keep you thinking for months after you have read it
