Moon on the Surface of Million Rivers

Book Review by: YCC

Original Author: Shiao, Li-Hong
Chinese woman literary writer, Li-Hong Shiao, winner of long novel for United Newspaper in 1980’s, wrote a novel, Moon
on the Surface of Million Rivers
, illustrates her view of young love. In the year when Japanese government occupied Taiwan, a young lady, A-Jen-Guan , and one young man, Da Shin, fall in love. A-Jen-Guan gives up her education because she thinks she would miss home; in the other hand, her boyfriend, Da Shin, continues his school, and then goes abroad. After he goes abroad, they continue mailing each other. What is true love for young people? Should she wait
for him? How about him? Would a distance cause a problem between them? As a kid, we often hear people say about young lovers. We would think, “Are they going to get married when they grow up.” Or, “Would married couples stay in marriage forever?” A Jen Guan and Da Shin, young couple, not only challenge the distance but also the political factor. In the year when Japanese government occupied Taiwan (also during the war), love for young people pursue eternity is no longer ever easier.
